Just hours left before the 4th of July America''s Independence Day when they
were freed from British Rule..  I know a lot about it as I have not only
lived in America but visited family recently in San Francisco California,
USA and its apposite to point out that these holidays in America
are very important ..

They are /big business/ and the whole of the nation pays a great deal of
attention to what is to be done, preparation for the 4th of July and other
issues ... plus Americans travel from one side of the world to the
other only to be at home for 4th of July ... so I was told when I
lived there years ago ...

One of my friends used to literally drive hundreds of miles to be
with her family in America ... one sunny morning I dropped in
and she was packing the car in preparation for the long drive to
New York from San Francisco.  I mentioned it to a friend and they
proffered the notion that my friend should /fly/ there as even in
those days, flights were cheap ... but she replied that she
was taking the kids and its a lot easier to keep them as back
seat drivers and stop off at different points on the long journey
than be cooped up in an aircraft for an hour or two with two
small children and no possibility of them letting off steam
or Mom getting any relaxation at all.

She took everything but the kitchen sink with her ... this I
considered quite an occasion ... so I phoned another man I
knew who lived at that time in Los Angeles and he too was
driving to Palm Springs to meet up with ... Pat McCann -
and McCann was then returning with said friend back to
Los Angeles to celebrate American Thanksgiving Day.

I am not sure in this country that we have the same
enthusiasm for holidays that Americans do ... we do like
our Bank Holidays ... but then we always talk about the
weather ... either we have having a heat wave like the
previous two years ... or now the whole of the country
(UK) is suffering from heavy rain and flooding!

Get your desert hat ready for 4th of July only a few
more hours to go.

I fussed about a bit, and ran up and down the road several times a day
to get my manuscript off to my American publishers before
4th of July .. and today is the National Postal Strike --
so fortunately only last night I received confirmation that
my manuscript had indeed arrived with my publishers
in Baltimore, who now will be on Thanksgiving Holiday
in America.
