Flashing past the book display in the window at Waterstones I caught sight of the
words "Genghis Khan" and was immediately drawn to the fact that this is always
seen as the race link to Turkey where I used to work for about 4 years ...
The Asiatic strain in Turkey is presented as the link of this great Conqueror in about 12th century onwards ... and the features of the Turks are seen as partially Asiatic and the rest of it ... European.
The interesting aspect of this research into Genghis Khan was for me a highpoint in our classes as my teaching partner was giving a class lecture on the very subject of
Genghis Khan in Turkkish ... and I had heard of Genghis Khan in the 1960s in Northern Ireland ... the connection in my case was my maiden name which was known as
French because of the association with Cannes Festivals and then Can ... as in the
first syllable of my maiden name! Being a busy banker I paid no attention to it.
But oddly enough my Turkish Teaching partner a lady was absolutely riveted by the news of my connections albeit slight with her lecture to our students So much so, in fact,
she then proceeded to translate the entire lecture into English for my benefit. I have never had the opportunity to thank the Lady GooNo for her translation so better late than never ... "Thanks GooNo" and the connection is still relevant years later and now
for everyone to see is on display in Waterstones Bookshope WIndow Display here in Southampton ...
Excellent stuff ... keep on reading the blogs ...
