How I went through learning vocabulary?
Vocabulary problem is the greatest obstruction in effective writing, even if you are a native speaker doesn’t mean that you are not perturbed with it. The best way to learn new words in a shorter period of time is to adopt the habit of reading. The more you read the more your subconscious mind would retain. Don’t just simply read and procrastinate and ignore the words you don’t know. Effective
vocabulary learning requires picking words from books and don’t just dwell upon memorizing what you have learned. Be sure to use the new words you have learned in
sentences of your own. No matter how smaller they are this would give you at least some
confidence in your writing.
I prefer reading good novels like ‘Harry Potter’ series with immense vocabulary to
increase my reading and writing power. Of course more exposure to vocabulary would boost your confidence to write well. Be sure to have ‘Oxford’ dictionary and thesaurus beside you while reading.
Another
technique that I discovered to remember vocabulary is to
relate the words to any subject, idea, place, thing or color. I usually relate words to
color and then with the help of short sentences try to memorize them. This technique has worked well for me; hopefully it would work for you too.
