The towering hardtaskmaster

Website Review by: AVIATOR HARDEEP

                            THE
TOWERING HARD TASK-MASTER
by Aviator Hardeep           He is a no ordinary man. A man, who with his endless zeal, unfathomable energy, sheer determination and hard work laid the foundation of one of the elite schools of India. The students who had joined this school in mid-seventies even as tiny toddlers, remember, how he blasted the otherwise serene and calm hills of Dalhousie(a beautiful hill station situated at an elevation of 6000+ feet) with dynamite, to build buildings after buildings. He virtually conquered the inhospitable, rocky terrain to give shape to one of the finest and well kept structures of Dalhousie. You seldom find anything attractive in Dalhousie other than this school. Tonnes and tonnes of steel, cement and other building material was ferried by every means he could deploy of; the trucks, the ponnies, mules, the backs of terrain hardened Gaddis (shepherds) etc. He would shuttle between site to site on foot and occasionally on his well-maintained left hand willy’s jeep. His stunningly attractive long coats, twirled moustache and exemplary way of passing instructions with his unusually tough and big hands was equally encouraging and dreadful for both the workers and the students alike. No one dare speak a word when he was around. His impressive Gait as that of a Maharaja, immaculate dressing sense, well kept beard, matchless style of tying a turban, differentiated him from the other Sikhs.

His evening strolls of the school campus would facilitate the efforts of the MODs to maintain discipline and pin-drop silence which otherwise was a difficult task for them. His sudden appearance in the dining hall would silence the forks and knives. His extraordinary administrative skills, ability to discern the trouble before it arose made him virtually an infallible man. A Glimpse of his agility and reflexes were best witnessed when he suddenly emerged out of the Deodar trees with a leopard like stealth and a cheetah like speed. Needless to say the number of troublemakers and erring hostellers he rounded up with each show of such a fitness. Getting caught by him was something we dreaded and feared the most. The worst he would do to us was, unleash the ‘Cane hurricane’ a term coined by his own NRI nephew and can still send shivers down the spine of many a ex-DPSeans. So notorious was his knurled cane that the impressions took months to fade away. But one thing which always stood out, were his de-briefings after a ‘cane hurricane’ session and briefings during the morning assembly, these undeniably stood many a DPSeans in good stead.

In early nineties something unfortunate happened and probably hurts all the ex DPSeans more than any body else. Trouble arose in the management of the school and the Great man had to part ways with the baby he had nursed all his life aka the school itself. But true to his image, he erected another huge and magnificent structure 45 nautical miles down hill. The look of the buildings he erected in Dalhousie was not to be left behind. The new school’s buildings bear a clear testimony to this fact and continue to reflect his unique architectural acumen.

Somewhere during this time he passed the baton on to his son, Prabeer S Grewal, whom he had brought up so extra-ordinarily. This legendary man, is none other than the most
revered
, well respected, honoured yet humble Mr. M S Grewal, thefounding father of the Dalhousie Public School. He continues to do his duties as steadfastly as he ever did, though preferring to remain behind the scenes. Now nearing eighty, he rarely talks to the visitors and can rarely be seen from the high fences of his villa. But one thing which is still heartening is that, the remnants of that old glory and grace which he once showcased still lingers around him, when spotted in a chauffeur driven SUV.
