South Korea to ship rice to North
South Korea has agreed to ship 500,000 tons of rice to North Korea to help it avert a food crisis. North Korea which has agreed to re-enter six party talks on ending its
nuclear program has captured the relief and the compassion of many nations- including its South Korean brethren. The gesture, say South Korean officials, is one of brotherly love and compassion.
Throughout the years, although differing in ideologies the two Koreas have been relatively close with South Korea providing much of the aid that is so
essential to North Korea’s deteriorating economy. Still communist, North Korea has concentrated most of its energy on
military and heavy industry development, neglecting other essential areas such as agriculture. This type of planned
economy has only resulted in dictatorship and a poorly run government that is starving its people. Much of North Korea’s
development of nuclear arms and nuclear power plants has been as a sort of threat towards the west and the quickly modernizing East. With nuclear weapons, Kim Jung Il, devious dictator of North Korea holds a trump card in world diplomacy.
However, China, South Korea, Japan, Russia, and the United States have pursued an unyielding hardline policy towards the North Koreans. Warning Kim Jung Il that no one will be coerced by his threatening moves, it seems that North Korea is running out of options. Already a rather backward state, the only strength it has left is in its ridiculous military expenditures which have topped even industrialized, modernized nations.
Hopefully the South Koreans who despite the danger of nuclear war and invasion have been persistent in their love for their countryman, will continue to be a bastion of hope and good will. Only in this way will North Korea finally realize that the international community is here to help not to harm.
