Well, they have a cute mascot and that is a start. BarterThing.com was debuted in 2007 to link people from all over
the world who have stuff they would like to swap rather than sell. They also allow users to barter services for goods. In theory the site makes sense, but a few seconds spent browsing the site shows that it is struggling.
There are many categories that have no postings in them at all. Automobiles reigns the day with 38 listings. To view the full details of a post you must enroll. Enrollment is free, but you have to list something when you enroll. As a result, there are bogus listings by people who are just trying to learn more about the site and its users. The small post count would not deter me from a golden opportunity to clear clutter and get what I want in one foul swoop. More people than ever are having to tighten their belts and clearly separate their needs from their wants. With a cogent and strategic marketing strategy, Barterthing.com could turn the corner toward web hub in these tough economic times. It would also behoove BarterThing to allow visitors to email listings to friends who may be interested.
How can you go wrong with ads like mygangof5’s: “will barter massage for construction supplies or large parrots”. Or bobjohn1212’s “I have no idea how to act. I guess I will just act at acting. I guess that is acting. I will come to your house and act. I can for beer”. Most ads, however, are run of the mill; listings for attorneys, psychologists, psychics and locksmiths soliciting for clients. (It is highly recommended that anyone who obtains services or relies on information from anywhere on the internet conduct research into the credentials of the other party.) A taste of the variety of products available on the site includes electronics, karaoke equipment, Amish-made wood furniture, domain names, and “BBQ smoker with trailer.”
Until July 15th, all member trades will be fee-free.
