In earlier times, when your family and you attended to a church, you used to sit on a pew. It was a special event at the time of going to church since you had to sit on the pew. The wood out of which these benches were made was of top quality substances and they were ever lasting. The change might appear a little bit odd considering the symbolic view which all these churches have maintained for more than twenty years or so and this is very much applicable in respect to Catholic Church.
