HOW TO COPE WITH COMPUTER
VIRUSES Computer viruses are almost born as the computer itself. It seems that we cannot escape with these monstrous malwares.
Yes,
malwares could be more appropriate word. However, it is not well-known as the term 'virus'.
There are several types of malwares: virus, worms, trojans, spywares, and 'malicious' adware. Anyway, we could just simply use the word 'virus' for all those things, which have their common objectives to infiltrate then: to damage and/or acquire.
New kinds of computers attack are: email scam, phising, vishing, pharming, and others coming up! They could not be said viruses but appropriately labeled as malware (as they fall to the common objective of acquiring).
Probably we cannot prevent the growing of viruses. But then, we concentrate to avoid them to infiltrate to our computer.
First off, select
antivirus software. This is the hardest thing to consider. You may do by searching on the Internet the top 10 antivirus out there. Select at least three out of the 10 antivirus, download one and install. If you think the one you picked is ok in terms of functionality, easiness of use, and have a daily update of definition file, then perfect. Let it scan all the local drives just to be sure. Remember though that you still have two remaining antivirus you have to try. Don't stick yet to the first you selected. Once you tried all those, and then just come back to the one which seems best for you.
Now, you have the very front
defense at your computer! But think of it. Is your private 'army' is capable to counter all the malwares (including new levels of computer attack) mentioned above?
Second off, if your antivirus is just capable to thwart virus/trojans/worms, and then get separate defenses like Firewall. This is your second defense. With this system, you will know which programs are going to connect outside OR inside of your computer. It will not escape without your permission. But be sure then that you are always on alert which are those you don't permit. Otherwise, you may think your system is not working, but it's just the firewall that's giving the hindrance.
Third off, if you just have antivirus/firewall, but not capable of anti-phising/vishing/pharming,anti-spyware,anti-spam, then get at least one. This is your third defense.
Now, you're almost having at least three levels of defense. That could be the best defenses you can have! But wait, how about the newly formed ones that your anti* are yet to detect? In this matter, you are the one responsibility to detect it!
Your responsibility is to make sure that you are on-guard against potential malwares. These are some ways which could prevent to gain on your computer:
(1) Know your executable files: .exe, .com, .msi, .bat, .vbs, .scr. These are just few of the 'most leading' executable which will immediately trigger once you press the enter key or double clicking the mouse on it.
(2) Be sure to uncheck the option 'hide extensions for known file types' in Windows Explorer. This will SHOW you what type of file is it through extension.
Why? Remember the infamous 'ILOVEYOU' worm? The attached file fooled the email recipient. It seen as 'attached.txt', but actually 'attached.txt.vbs'.
(3) Frequently check which files start when Windows started, as most viruses reside on it. Click: START->RUN: type: MSCONFIG, click: startup tab. If such program is likely a suspect, you may uncheck it so that it won't run the second time you start Windows. Your suspect is true if on second time you start Windows it shows again marked check.
(4) Unable to avoid sharing folder on network because of easy to access but already your company has swarm of viruses? When sharing a folder, you may hide it to others. Put a '$' in front of it on 'Share name' box. Say your folder name is 'share', in share name put it as: '$share'.
Then to browse on that folder, type: '\\computer-name\$share'.
(5) When going to install application or hardware, you may create a restore point on System Restore. This is one sure thing that you can return back to when you were before if any unusual happening to your computer.
(6) Almost all executable files you can download from P2P (peer-to-peer) have viruses. So be ware of it.
(7) Going to porn sites will surely make not only you hot but your computer as well. So be ware of it. If accidentally you were lead on such, then check your browser's status bar, and see which sites you were leading to. Click the x button or the stop button before anything it gets from you.
(8) Always remove Internet Cookies on your browser.
(9) Remove temporary files on your \windows\temp.
(10) Backup your data files, hardware drivers cds, and your installation files. Once the malwares became uncontrolled, you may just format your hard drives and know your lessons and avoid where you taken those viruses.
