I’d like to begin by saying that I consider myself a webcomic connoisseur, I’ve read geek drama till yoghurt has run out of my nose even while I’m drinking coffee or cola, fantasy comics,
gaming comics, sprite comics,
smart comics, gaming comics,
comics so stupid that I’ve lost IQ
points just through being exposed to them and still felt smarter cause I’d seen what I had to compare myself to, RPG comics, blasphemous comics, zen comics, gaming comics, comics about comics, surreal comics and gaming comics. Gaming comics are only outnumbered by comics making fun of gaming comics and their lack of original material, this is frequently their only joke.
Point is, I know webcomics. Sluggy was one of the first I came across, I still
check it everyday. Sure, I’ve flirted around, even had a few little flings with other productions that caught my eye in passing, but its always Sluggy I come crawling back to, drunk and bleary eyed with crumpled clothes and smudged mascara, and it always takes me back. Sluggy is love.
As for what it’s about, that’s kind of hard to answer (although the box compels me to make the attempt), it’s like asking what purpose is served by a beautiful flower, or “why is purple?”. Truth and light seem fairly good starting points, though there’s an awful lot more to it than that, friends fight for each other and the values they
believe in against a soap opera world of Aliens™, vampires and creepy evil old estate agents.
Which just makes it sound like every other lameass collection of margin scribbles let loose upon an undeserving public (rather than getting e-mailed to criminals on death row as they rightfully should be), but it’s not! Really, believe me it’s not. It’s funny and smart and cool and emotionally moving, it doesn’t try to pass off randomisation as originality and it has characters you can
Really believe in, no matter how unbelievable the world gets.
Just check it out, read up to the first vampire story and if you manage to get any sleep tonight I encourage you to bomb this abstract off of Shvoong and replace it with a long list of all the nasty names you’d like to call me, or else just have a nice afternoon, whichever seems most appropriate.
