NaNoWriMo (www.nanowrimo.org) stands for
National Novel Writing Month, and is a writing event which happens every
year in November. Despite the name,
NaNoWriMo is not concentrated on one single country, but is international rather than just national (as they explain it, InaNoWriMo wouldn’t sound as clinging). NaNoWriMo was founded by Chris Baty in 1999, and back then there were only 21 participants. In 2004, the number had grown from 21 to 42000, and more are expected this year.
The basic idea of this fantastic event is to write a 50000 words novel in a
Month – a task many find beyond the reach of human capabilities. However, each year more and more
participants cross that magical 50000 words line and can rightfully call themselves winners of NaNoWriMo. They don’t get any prises, they get something much more valuable – they can call themselves novelists. They get praise and glory from fellow wrimoes, and they prove to themselves and the world that they CAN. A handful of participants have even published their novels!
Many people would say that you can’t possibly write anything good in a month. But that is a part of NaNoWriMo – write crappy and don’t have any high expectations to what you write. And somehow, in the sea of plotholes and dizzy characters, there always is something brilliant. The fact is, one month in not too short a time for such a thing as writing a novel – the deadline will help you overtuning your brain and writing something incredibly great. This has been proved every year.
Hopefully, many more will participate in creating a flow of fiction this November. It sure is fun.
