Things to do in Florence
The city of Florence in Italy is famous not just for its every corner being caressed by nature
but also for its culture and heritage. With countless things to do all round the year this city woos the hearts of many people across the globe. Florence is one of the best places to rejuvenate your life and make your vacation worthwhile.
Florence sites
After moving into Florence you will encounter a confluence of ancient, medieval and contemporary sites. The center of Florence’s political life is bordered by some of the most wonderful pieces of art and architecture.
· The Piazza del Duomo- it is a pink, white and green marble façade, a characteristic dome that unlike others converges with the city’s skyline. The construction of this dome took two whole decades. While Brunelleschi designed its outer appearance, the Renaissance titans Vasari, Zuccari, Donatello, Uccello and Ghibert have created its internal patterns. Climbing up and on taking a closer look at the dome will reveal its dexterous construction. This dome is tallest in the town. Also worth watching is the Bapistry built adjacent to the dome. The building is widely known for its gilded bronze doors that were designed by Pisano and Ghiberti. A visit to the Duomo Mueseum will confront you with the magnum opus of Michelangelo.
· If you are in Florence make sure that you go to the Santa Croce church. The famous inhabitants of this place are Michelangelo, Macchiavelli, Galileo and Bardi. The artwork of Giotto and della Robbia is exhibited on the various chapels inside. Other churches that one ought not to miss are All Saints (it has frescoes by Botticelli and Ghirlandio), the statue filled Orasnmichele, the Santa Maria Novella (see the Masaccio’s revolutionary Trinity here).
· Pitti Palace, the palace designed by Brunelleschi for the Pitti Family is a place frequently visited by the tourists.
· Strozzi and Rucellai (today’s photographic museum) palace are also teeming with visitors all round the year.
· Boboli Gardens are a paradigm of Renaissance landscaping. Pools, fountains, tree-lined vistas can also be enjoyed in the gardens.
Florence Events
· Explosion of a cart full of fireworks marks the commencement of the Cart festival that is cheered with incredible enthusiasm on Easter Sunday.
· The Feast of St. John the Baptist is held on 24 June every year.
· Calcio Storcio is the event that features football matches being played in 16th century costumes. It is held in Piazza della Signoria and finishes with fireworks over Piazzale Michelangelo.
Florence Nightlife and Entertainment
· Florence welcomes you with its magnificent bars and pubs, discos and clubs, live music concerts etc. the Santa Croce and East of the Center, Oltrarno, Between the Duomo and the Arno are some of the most cherished pubs and bars in Florence.
· You can bask in the glory of live music at the Santa Croce and the East of Center, Olantro and at several other places. These two also serve as good disco joints.
Shopping in Florence
Shopping in Florence is not cheap but you can expect commendable quality stuff here. Florence is known for clothes, leather goods, ceramics, excellent souvenirs, handicrafts and the like. Sale season at joints like the Big Apple is an opportunity for many visitors to grab something. However shops do not open for Monday morning session.
