Perth Zoo Open Hours: M-Su 9am-5pm P.O. Box 489 Perth, WA 6951 Australia Telephone: 61 8 9474 3551 Web: www.perthzoo.wa.gov.au Perth Zoo is a treat to go to time and again, for entertainment and for education. The zoo has more than1200 animals. These are from some two hundred species, all different. The best part is that these have all been allowed to flourish in large areas simulating their natural environs. While there, you can visit and view the Penguin Plunge or go on the Australian Walkabout. You could also take the Australian Bushwalk. If you like, you could go down to the African Savannah’s dry riverbed. You could work your way through the dense Asian Rainforest. You also have a Butterfly House. The variety of treats is substantial. A visitor can witness animals at their feeding times or listen to keeper talks. There are conducted tours for the interested. Besides all this there are some special organized events from time to time. As the visitors report its fun, it’s fantastic and the best part is that the ferry makes the visit to the zoo so quick. The entry charge for adults is A$16, for children A$8, on concession A$13 and for senior citizens it is A$12. The Perth Zoo is also doing commendable work in the areas of conservation and research since a modern zoo owes it to the society to work on environmental issues besides catering for entertainment. Currently, among other issues, the zoo is involved in a global campaign in improvement of the awareness of the public as well as understanding of the threatened extinction of the frog species. 2008 has therefore been declared as the Year of the Frog. The zoo has a program to reintroduce frogs in protected environments. It is also participating actively in Native species Breeding Program (NSBP) and Australian Species Management Program (ASMP). It is therefore a fitting tribute to the zoo that its attempts to help prevent the extinction of the Sumatran Orang-utan and the Rothschild’s Giraffe have both been successful so far. A baby orang-utan was born on 21 Nov 07 and a baby giraffe was born on 24 Dec 07. You can see all these and more at the Perth Zoo.
