This is the website for one of best-kept secrets of the Mexican Riviera Maya! Casa Cenote
is
located on the Yucatan peninsula on Tankah Bay, a little over an hour’s drive south of Cancun. This is a lovely, non-commercialized vacation spot for those who don’t care for the all-inclusive luxury resorts located just to the north!
My travel group came upon this site after several days of braving the crowds at Xcaret and Chichen Itza. What a refreshing change! There was practically no one on the beach in front of the
restaurant when we arrived.
What makes this place such a fantastic find for snorkelers and divers alike is the cenote located behind the restaurant. The cenote has an underground cavern, which allows water to flow under the restaurant and empty into the ocean just offshore. Earlier in the day we saw some scuba divers enter the cenote, and then were amazed to see them emerge from the ocean-side outlet a bit later!
We had our own snorkel gear, although Casa Cenote has snorkel and diving gear for rent. The water is so shallow inshore that you have to practically crawl out and push off to get started. Once out, though, we had some interesting experiences where the cenote empties out into the ocean. There were thermoclines where the warm water met the cold and most of the fish hung out beyond the outlet. The outlet itself looked like a huge mouth opening into the earth, and you could feel the thousands of gallons being spewed out. One of our party also encountered a barracuda from a distance.
Although we did not stay at the hotel, we had a delicious meal on the open veranda. I got hooked on Horchata, a traditional Mexican drink made with rice, almonds and cinnamon, and I indulged in it at Casa Cenote, as well.
The website is very user-friendly and well labeled. Every link was operational when I visited. The phone number is listed on the bottom of every page, requiring no frustrating backtracking to locate. Best of all, the pages do not open up in new windows, allowing for faster load times. The section with customer reviews is quite helpful, as is the map and extensive list of area activities (if you want to even leave that beautiful area!).
So, as you are making your holiday plans, check out this website for an experience you are sure to remember for a lifetime!
