Its cliche to start by writing that Mumbai, the erstwhile Bombay is also called the "City of Dreams". Why and when did this synonym got associated with the city..no one knows. But many if not all say that it is called the "
City of Dreams" because over the
years Mumbai has been favorite destination for lifelihood and bread earning. Some of todays famous icons and movers n shakers of the City were yester years strugglers and moved from other
cities to make a mark of their own. Its futile to name any..if one who is reading this article is an Indian would very well know it..but for starters some of the Bollywood's famous names come from different cities.
Well, but Mumbai is also important to India for other reasons. It is the Financial Capital of India. Unlike New York , Singapore or be it Shanghai ,which to some extent have defined the meaning of a Business District with their Tall Rising Buildings and what nots...Mumbai is definitely not in contention.
So what makes Mumbai "City of Dreams" for a common man ? For one, if a person belongs to the service class he wont be able to stay inside the City limits and would be staying in some Sub-urb locale. If he manages to get a
place inside the City then either the place would be as spacious as his Coffin or else, if he manages to get a bigger place then he would be paying half or even more of his earnings towards rent. The city is like a Funnel. Everyday
people travel from many suburban places to the South of the City for work. And they invariably take the Local Trains that take them from North to South of Mumbai.One can imagine the plight of the passengers in the trains during Office days.
Life in Mumbai is tough and if you are from any other place in India or in World you woud find it difficult.
True the city is very lively and gives you options in life. But question to be asked is what happens when people dont see Mumbai as a place for employment. What if people find a option ? Would there be some kind of reverse migration to other cities. Well even in Mumbai, there has been some sort of Migration of Banks and Institutions to the Suburbs from South of Mumbai. Same holds true for most Film and Business icons. Point is , whose patience breaks first. If People of Mumbai break before the Administration or the Govt. then you could see a different Mumbai after may be 25 years when Travellers have Mumbai in their itenary along with other winter beach destinations.
