The BBC website today 08/02/2007 declares that (the Archbishop of Canterbury is said to be overwhelmed by the "hostility of the response" after his call for parts of Sharia law to be recognised in the UK.)
I have to question his motives. We are living in a British Country under British rules yet now we are expected to have several different laws to fit certain religions. What annoys me most is that some month’s back an English school teacher was thrown into prison over allowing the Muslim school children to name a teddy bear Mohammed. It raises the question that if we allow Muslim law in this Country then should we not also allow English law in Muslim Countries. Otherwise it is unfair. A British person is expected to abide by the Muslim law if they are in a Muslim Country, but a Muslim person is allowed to abide by the Muslim law in a none Muslim Country. It doesn’t add up and it certainly doesn’t answer equal.
“Islamic Sharia law is a legal and social code designed to help Muslims live their daily lives, but it has proved controversial in the West for the extreme nature of some of its punishments.”
It seems that this world is going chaotic. Nobody seems to know what to do anymore and if they do they seldom seek to do right. I have no problem with certain areas of Sharia law it is when the extremes are used to allow criminals to escape their punishment. Some Sharia law is actually very positive for example, “It stipulates, for instance, that men and women must dress modestly, refrain from alcohol and pray five times per day.” I am sure we can all see the benefits to this. However there are extreme forms of punishment if a person doesn’t obey the law. Even as far as if you fornicate you will be stoned, if you consume alcohol you will be lashed, and if you steal you can expect your limbs to be amputated.
How can it be our right to take another persons life? Surely prison is a better punishment since that individual will have to live with what they have done for the rest of their lives. I know that our legal system leaves something to be desired, but it is in place for a reason. Allowing Sharia law to take over poses the question should we be allowed to be justified by our law when committing crimes in another Country? It all comes down to the fact that certain sections of the community are allowed favouritism over others.
"The Church at the moment, and the country, needs a clear lead. The country is itself in a debate about its own sense of identity," the Reverend Rod Thomas said.
I have to agree with this statement. It does seem as though British citizens have less rights and more worryingly people of other faiths and Countries have increasingly more rights. What laws our we to abide by if one section of the Country believes one thing and the other believes another? Britain is losing its identity and becoming overrun with foreigners. It leaves me worryingly with these questions how many true British Citizens will live here in the next decade and will the British law exist as we know it today?
