Racing Towards Inclusion

Article Review by: yqwong

Original Author: David Tereshchuk
About:
The article talks about a story of a father and son, Dick and Rick Hoyt who participated and won several marathon
races despite Rick's disability to walk and talk. Doctors advised to put Rick away given that he would be a vegetable for life but Dick determines to keep and raise his son in a normal environment. With this determination, he managed to put Rick in a normal local school and found Rick's ability to communicate and understand.  'Team Hoyt' began when Rick expressed his interest in sports and proposed to join the very first run. Despite all the discomforts and obstacle faced by Rick, he graduated with a degree in Special Education and now is working in Boston College's computer laboratory.
The article creates a realization for us to not give up and judge a person without trying to understand or include them into our lives. If disability did not stop Rick from leading a normal and successful life, what is stopping us?
