The idea was to create a search engine using links that would provide results based on the page most relevant to the search term. This was in 1997 and it was first called BackRub but the name was later change to Google. The name Google was derived from the word 'Googol'. This is a mathematical term that basically means the number 1 followed by one hundred zeroes i.e. 1 x 10 to the power 100.The name represented the amount of information that Google wanted to put into the hands of its user.
Google is the biggest search engine in the world and the most popular. So popular that it has an urban catch phrase coined after it; "Google it" or "just Google it", which I am sure a lot of us have either heard, used or both.
There is nothing you cannot search on Google. Think of the internet and the millions of computers which hold millions of websites as a cave of treasures and Google as the gatekeeper. It is not like the disney movie Ali Baba and the forty thieves where you shout the secret word 'open sesame' to get access to the treasures in the cave or going on a quest to find the one gate that leads to the worlds on the other side. All you have to do is just type what you want and voila! you have all the information you need. Imagine that, the whole world at your finger tips!
Google offers various options when searching, like: images maps, videos, news, shopping, applications, books and so much more. There is also the handy little tool: Google Translate which translate in over 100 languages. Google has its own email:Google Mail (Gmail) and their own browser Google Chrome. You can also make money on Google using programs like Adsense.
In a fast paced world like ours which thrives on instant gratification and information is power ,Google not provides these two but also gives us access to the world like its our local library, cafe, pub, travel guide and so much more. The world is just a click away.
