Are there
wrong ways to promote my site?
Yes! SEO is not just about what you should do, it is also about what you should not. There are several basic rules and restrictions. SEO
experts might use them, but they're also risking the site they're promoting. Take a good look and beware of Google's black lists.
Cloaking
There are technological ways of knowing who's just entered your site. SEO wrong way, is to know when the Google's spider is coming, and let him crawl trough a different
content/pages then your users crawl.
Hidden text
It is very easy to fill your
page with hidden text (for example: white font over a white background). However, the
search engine will punish for this kind of action.
Multi domains
Many SEO 'wrong way' experts are using this trick. They just register a whole bunch of domain names (usually, containing the site keywords) and direct them to the same site. The search engines will usually locate the whole bunch, index only part of them, and sometimes even erasing all of them from the index.
Double content
Search engines loves content. Search engines loves
sites which add content on regular base. But what search engine dislike (understatement) is copying one page content into a new page. be careful!
Cross
links As you know, Google's Page rank (AKA - PR) is all about incoming links. When Google sees too many links between a net of sites, he suspects. He them checks their IP range and if he sees cross links between sites and determined they're doing it just for the sake of PR, he punishes.
Keywords OD (Overdose)
Density of keywords is a very important parameter for SEO process. It is wrong to put your keywords everywhere without consider the density.
Link farms
There are sites (usually called FFA - Free For All) which unable adding as much links as you (and another 1,000,000 people) want. A link from a site who has more then 100 links, is like not linking at all.
Can Google really know when I promoting the wrong way?
Yes! SEO experts must be aware that there are (at list) three ways: 1. Red Flag - when the spider puts up the red flag on after crawling a site - the site gets PR0. 2. Manually - It seems like Google's people search experts and sites forums. 3. Informing - search engines encouraging people to submit suspicious URL's.
