The Great British Earthquake
You must be a really deep sleeper or live at the
far reaches of Britain if you missed the
tremor during the night of the 26th and 27th February 2008. Just before 1am an
Earthquake measuring 5.3 in
magnitude hit mainland England.
The epicenter was close to the small Lincolnshire town of Market Rasen and the shockwave''s were felt as far as London, Wales and even reports from far into Scotland.
The earthquake was the largest in Britain for almost 25 years with the previous largest being 5.4 in magnitude hitting North Wales in 1984.
The earthquake caused little structural damage with the odd chimney
pot falling and a few cracks in walls. No one was seriously hurt but reports suggest that someone''s legs was broken in Yorkshire from a falling chimney pot.
Earthquakes are nothing new in Britain as believe it or not we have around 200 earthquake a year but around 90 percent of those are so small they go un-noticed by us and are only recorded on the scientific equipment.
The largest ever earthquake to hit Britain was in 1931 off the coast in the North Sea. This measured 6.1 in magnitude.
