US WAR COSTS
It has been estimated that the Iraq war has cost US more than 700
billion dollars, even higher than the Vietnam War. Despite all the war effort US is no where in ensuring a peace loving
democracy in Iraq.
Iraq
appears to be in worse condition, compared to Saddam times, since daily deaths
increased many fold. What the American war effort delivered to the Iraqi people
is questionable.
America
is
bleeding and Iraq
is bleeding. The same amount spent on war, if spent on development efforts
would have improved the lot of at least 100 million people. It is time for the US to
think again on war spending. The war made more enemies for the US. The war
made US lose the
precious lives of American soldiers. If Saddam was offered a
hundred billion dollars in exchange for
liberal democratic rule in Iraq, he would
have gladly accepted perhaps and gave up all the threatening postures. Because,
that would have eradicated poverty completely in Iraq. Now the US position is so delicate that it cannot come
out of Iraq
as easily as it entered.
The policy makers in the US have to deliberate on whether
wars are the answer to their wish for a peace loving and liberal democracy. If
Iraqis genuinely want liberal democracy, none could have stopped them. It
appears to me that the US
jumped into the fray, again repeating the classic error of misjudging the real
aspirations of people and wasting precious tax payers’ money. It is time for
the US
to think seriously whether war option in global affairs is relevant any more.
