Abstract NATO's use of forces against
Yugoslavia has put the Balkans into an unprecedented crisis and deteriorated the situation in
the European Continent, and thus will cast a serious impact on world peace and stability as well
as the international relations and
political configuration in the 21st century. The
air campaign was totally manipulated by the United States, designing to provide cases for NATO's new
strategic concept, restrain and control the Continent so as to consolidate its leadership in
European affairs, and split up Yugoslavia in attempt to hold sway over the Balkans and
diminish the sphere of influence of Russia and other hostile nations. NATO's air
strikes against
Yugoslavia has cast a heavy impact on the current world political pattern as well as the
security system and inflicted serious damage on the global economic development. In order to
fulfill its strategic intention, NATO will not
easily abandon its set goal, but on the other side of
the shield, Yugoslavia will not be easily forced into submission. Therefore, NATO will further
heighten its air campaign against Yugoslavia and may even resort to ground attack. However,
although the two sides both held firmly to their own stands, neither of them wants to shut the
door to political
settlement of the crisis. In the meantime, the international community has
stepped up its diplomatic mediation for creating an environment for peaceful settlement of the
Kosovo crisis. The road to reaching a peace agreement will be long and tortuous, but seeking
political settlement of the crisis will finally gain the upper hand.
