AbstractWith the reversion of Hong Kong to its
motherland, the concept of “one country, two systems”has been realized in
great success. The SAR Government headed by Mr. C.H.Tung has obtained initial achievements in “running Hong Kong by the Hong Kong people”. The overall economic cooperation and joint development between Hong Kong and the hinterland have a bright prospect. Hong Kong has always played an important role as an intermediary and bridge in the contacts and exchanges between the mainland and Taiwan. The maintenance and further development of the non official exchanges between Hong Kong and Taiwan under the princple of“one China”will exert extensive and profound impact on the promotion of the cross Strait relations and on the realization of the reunification of the
motherland. As a capitalist
international metropolis, Hong Kong, with its“freest economic system in the world”,will help to build up the exchanges between China and the international community, promote the economic cooperation in the Asia Pacific region and establish an open and liberalized system for the regional trade and investment. The successful experience drawn from the reversion of Hong Kong to the motherland and Mr.Deng Xiaoping's new ideas for peaceful settlement of international disputes will undoubtedly play a significant catalystic role to the promotion of peace in the Asia Pacific region.
