Since late 1970s and early 1980s, the
new Islam Fundementalism has become an importent
political ideology in the Islam world. Compared with the Old Islam Fundementalism it has four characteristics: emphasising its identity with the trend of the times, cherishing a strong political consciousness for seizing the pol-itical power, paying serious attention to the means of
modern political struggle, and finding its basic backbone among the non-professional religious thinkers and intellectuals. Although the new Islam Fundementalism is not united as far as theoretical systems are concerned, yet they are in common on some fundemen-tal issues such as the advocation of founding a theocracy, the Islamization of the legal system, the Jihad, and the establishmnt of an Islamic
world system, and so on. It has both its
positive and
negative significance. The positive
aspects manifest themselvs in the exploration for a model of modernization, an attempt for a modern state which combines politics and religion, and an indomitable pur-suance for national rejuvenation; the negative aspects lie mainly in the intensification of the social seperative function, the prevalence of violence and terrorist activities and the violation of the five principles for peaceful co-existence in international relations. With the development in depth of the movement, the new Islam Fundementalism will be further theorized and systemized, and accordingly its content will be continually enriched.
