On Palestine-Israel Conflict

Article Abstract by: TsingHua

Palestine-Israel conflict has a long history. Since Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon took office, Palestine-Israel confrontation
has intensified. U. S. Middle East policy helped the Sharon government to adopted a tough and violence-worship approach. President of the Palestinian Authority Yasser Arafat is in a very difficult situation. The international community widely condemns Israel, sympathizes with Palestine and criticizes the U. S. President Bush sent Secretary of State Powel on a mission to mediate the conflict by pressurizing Palestine. Although the current bloody conflict, which has lasted over nineteen months may relax, it could break up once again as long as the Palestinian question is not resolved in a complete and fair way. A political solution of Palestine-Israel question calls for mutual concession by Palestine andIsrael. History and practice show that Palestine and Israel cannot reconcile themselves without intense international mediation. At present no country other than the U. S. can play that role. The U. S. has already stepped up its mediation efforts in Palestine-Israel conflict by urging the two sides to end conflict and resume dialogue in order that it can expand U. S. campaign against terrorism, and launch a military strike on Iraq. But the U. S., for the sake of its own interest, will not change its established pro-Israel position, nor will it make serious efforts for a complete and fair resolution of the Palestinian question.
