Based on the determination of characteristic loading points from the
instrumented impact testing curve, and with the empirical
equations given by European Structural Integrity Society (ESIS) for estimation of percentage of shear fracture (PSF) for CVN specimens, an analytical and in real-time evaluation method for determination of PSF value was introduced in this paper by using
instrumented impact testing. In terms of error analysis (by error scatter band method and confidence limit Intervals method respectively) for the correlation between estimated PSF and measured PSF values, it was obviously founded that PSF value could be evaluated highly accurately by
instrumentation method, according to the suitable empirical equation. Compared with the common manually optical evaluation method, instrumentation method is of independence on the subjective experience of tester and specific poor experiment conditions objectively, which is expected to be a convenient and effective tool, facilitating the evaluation of PSF index and the study on the mechanism of material dynamics fracture with extensive perspective.
