For the past two decades, Islam has been the single most persistent foreign policy concern of the United States. No other issue has preoccupied American foreign policy-makers so long during this period as the issue of the so-called Islamic threat, which in most cases was a negative result of an ungrounded assumption on the part of those policy-makers. However, Kosovo war is a break-through in the foreign policy of the United States and the American government should take this opportunity to rethink and readjust its policy on Islam and Islamism to bring it in line with the changing reality in politics, domestic and regional as well as international. For American policy-makers, they should focus their attention in policy-making to the promotion and protection of American national interest rather than the false assumption of Islam vs. the West in ideology or value system. While adopting a flexible foreign policy close attention should be paid to the new upsurge of the Sunni brand Islamism, which has already had heavy influence on regional politics and stability in South Asia, Central Asia, North Caucasus and Balkan regions.
