World’s Circassians and Adyge Khase,
an organization in the Adygei
Republlic, described Sochi as a land of
genocide where the Ubuh people
formerly lived.
Guetl’s statement came after Sochi was selected as the location to host the 2014 Winter Olympic Games: “
Sochi
is a land of genocide; besides, the administration should be
reminded of the Circassians who lived here when it mentions the Olympic
games. The Circassians lived here for ages, but the 19th
century Russian-Caucasian wars forced all of them out of the country.
The view of Circassian non-governmental organizations has it that
whatever happened then should be regarded an act of genocide.
Sochi
, Tuapse, Dagomis, Loo and Vardane are all Circassian names.”
“The Ubuh people, a descendent branch of the Circassians, were all exterminated during the 19th century wars. Krasnaya Polyana is the place where the last phase of the war of independence took place.”
