CONCEPT OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN SOUTH- ASIA: THE SAGA

Article Abstract by: RashiSureka

Original Author: Sami Ali and Rashi Sureka
“The world is sufficient for everyone’s needs, but not for everyone’s greed”
                                                      - Mahatma Gandhi       Metaphors don’t often speak for themselves as they are heavily bribed. The progeny and prosthetics of life often lead us to situations, when we have to face the myriads of fate and tirades of destiny. One such question which faces us is the question of the conservation of our fragile environment from the sadomasochistic and vulpine forces   As the world stands and stares on the path of mutually assured destruction, owing to the reckless use of the already scarce natural resources, the world stands at a very crucial crossroads of history. We have been responsible for the gradual degradation of our mother earth and there is no one else to blame.   The scale of pollution which has been occurring throughout the world in the last 50-60 years has been a major source of concern. The signs of ever-increasing global warming and the melting of the polar caps have given an ominous sign that all is not well and major conservation efforts need to be taken , to prevent the earth from falling prey to the scourge of the forces of nature.   But one more thing which can never be contradicted is the fact that the process of industrialization and modernization is also necessary to ensure all round development of the mankind. It is this question, which bothers everyone that how protection of environment and process of economic development should go hand in hand.   The solution for all these problems lies in the fact that the concept of Sustainable Development or gradual balance of ecology and trade should be promoted through all ways and countries of the world must realize the fact that this is perhaps the best chance for them to conserve their environment, while balancing the growth of finance and trade, which is now days a very integral part of every country’s quest to march proudly in the path of progress and development.      The paper accompanying this abstract mainly deals with all these issues, while confining the study to South Asia, mainly because of the fact that these countries in the next 30-40 years have tremendous possibility of economic development, but the real fear lies in the realization that in this process that should sacrifice their rich flora and fauna, which they are naturally endowed with. The countries of South- Asia namely India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan and Maldives have to promote the concept of Sustainable Development in a manner so as to balance all their interests and yet achieve all round economic development, which is one of the key forte in their quest to become super- power nations in the next half century or so.
