It is too bad big time
politicians could not remember the small town political roots they came from. Local ballots
consist of selectmen, school committee seats, and etc. Articles generally run the lists of roads to name or hot top and school budgets. Turnouts are normally high as long as the weather holds out. National
elections spice up the atmosphere. Those running for an office best be truthful and not make too many promises or face not getting elected again.
The cost of running a local campaign may run a couple thousand dollars the first year. After that most of the road side signs are still in good condition for next year. These are grassroot politics. People were not placed on pedestals and merely re-elected because they wore the right suit or said just the right thing.
Something happens to
politicians when they hit Capitol Hill. Money becomes basis for everything. Once elected, they begin running again by way of image keeping. Lobbyists and special interest groups creep outof the wodwork and into the corridors of senate and congressional offices. Not everyone ends up in this club. Those who really care stay true to the ones electing them. Sadly, the small percentage who do change for the worst taint all of the congress in many eyes.
It is unfair to say all politicians are callous ad uncaring. Oddly enough, those who began in small town elections seem to last a little longer when they remember where they came from. Too bad they all couldn't.
