A terrorist is a mercenary who assassinates or self destructs for an agenda he truly believes in, which could be money or power or a fight for his religious belief/patriotism. Whether his unlawful belief is rational or distorted he doesn''t care, and hurts more sentiments than gaining support from. Terrorists and terrorist activities, or news about them, have become part of our life. How on the earth did we allow this to happen to ourselves? They are clumsy murderers, aren''t they? But guess what, they used to be one of us. Who made them a terrorist? Sure we didn''t. We are the law abiding citizens, we never commit crimes. Hell we do. By being passive. Osama or Saddam, we created them. Yes, I am talking about Americans. One or many militant organizations have been fostered by government organizations. When the matter goes out of hand, we cry foul. We can''t blame our governments, but we allow a democratic or non-democratic society to be raped by virtue of our fear. The latest attack on Benazir is one of the many misfortunes we are condemned to see. Many conspiracy theories can surface as a result of this attack. 1.President and General Musharraf wanted to eliminate her. 2.She allowed this to happen to gain sympathy votes. 3.USA will twist Pakistan’s arm for allowing this open use of violence and for the failure of the existing regime to give protection to those who believe in installing democracy. It also makes a case for allegedly USA supported Benazir to become an icon of democracy and taking over from General Musharraf. This gives another opportunity to India to show the world what is happening inside its neighbor which could soon cross the borders. But, we as a global citizens and supporters of peace have one question for the powerful people involved in this incident. What was ISI and Pakistan military doing, if they were warned beforehand? And if the Pakistan regime is so weak to protect its leaders and innocent civilians, where is the country going? What are the steps Pakistan government is taking to stop the violence in the future? These are the men, Pakistan wanted to use in Afghanistan but the devil of violence has been unleashed. If Pakistan thinks that this is its internal problem, it is being self-centered. Merely promising America to join hands in fight against terrorism is not enough. Indeed the ruthless attack on innocent civilians must be condemned and harshly dealt with. But, the problem is more deep rooted than it appears. Those who understand the internal issue of Pakistan can elaborate, but violence is the last resort. What is the real problem that Pakistan has been unable to solve? It is quite evident that situation has reached to an extent that solution on or around tables’ looks like a distant dream. But, it is never too late. No person, in his right mind would appreciate the killing of innocents. It is time we should raise our voice and say: “The people of Pakistan have the right to live in peace." Please leave them alone if you can''t help them. No politics please. It is time; we should make this zone of terrorism a land of peace. Actions speak louder than words. But here lies the problem. Before we can solve a problem, we should accept that there is problem without being defensive. If we chose to ignore it as rhetoric of a Pakistan hater, we will not solve the problem. A dialogue to bring the alienated to mainstream is must. Merely playing with words may not suffice, since mature citizens would want concrete and tangible results. Let''s assure Pakistan that they are not alone. We are all together in this. But the creative and constructive actions have to come from them. Help from outside is welcome but they are the one''s who are facing it on daily basis and living with bad reputation. Here are a few solutions: 01Ruthless handling of those wreaking violence02.Constructive actions to provide employment - the root of many evils, if not all.03.Free education till graduation for 20 years. Non, no matter what.04.No child labor, no matter what.05.No discrimination to the family members of known terrorists. 06.Enforcing respect for other religions as part of the elementary schooling. 07Every educational institution should have at least one non-Muslim student or teacher. 08.A mandatory yearly national debate on the improvement of society and nation including topics like growth, science, fiscal policy, religion and religious belief with active participation of youth 09. Put all conflicts that might result in use of military power on hold for 30 years until you are a developed country. Use the resources judiciously towards constructive creation of opportunity. Use facts, not emotions. Your neighbor may not have invaded first, on another country in 2000 years.10.Accept other cultures as an opportunity to learn from them rather than considering them as an attack on your society, e.g. culture from the west.11.Voluntary organizations should work towards removal of adult illiteracy. Generation gap sometimes stops the synchronization of thoughts. When the adult and young are on the same wave length the energy spent is focused. 12.A nation-wide web of grievance cell for accepting complaint from those who feel they are being alienated with a central repository with no room for negligence or retaliation. You loose the congruence; you loose the faith of your own people.
