An Attempt on Life of Benazir or A warning

Article Summary   by:Babu Gautam     Original Author: Babu Gautam

After prolonged negotiations with Pervez Musharraf, on 18th October 2007, former Prime Minister of Pakistan, Benazir Bhutto returned to her homeland. That too after having seen, just a few weeks earlier, the fate of her compatriot and also the former premier Nawaz Sharif. She played her cards better, undoubtedly. But in hindsight, she had better luck as well. If it was an unceremonious and hasty ‘pack off’ for Nawaz, death was scripted for Benazir.

It was not a bolt from the blue. She had feared, rather foresaw with certainty, an attempt on her life. So much so that a day before her arrival, she got a letter hand –delivered to Pervez Musharraf to investigate certain individuals in the event of something happening to her. It is strange that she didn’t fix the responsibility on the head of the state by asking him to take the precautionary measures. It is stranger that it still happened. She survived and the investigation against the individuals she named, is not necessary, given the track record of the administration in that country.
The foremost and the most prominent among the names she named is one that of Ejaz Shah, the head of Pakistan’s Intelligence Bureau. Shah is Musharraf’s long time associate and by the position he is occupying, believably a trusted man of the president. It means Benazir either believed that Ejaz Shah is not in the control of Musharraf or wanted to make the president aware that she knew what was being conspired in ‘honor’ of her arrival. What happened exactly on the day, the world will never know. There is perhaps no system of tabling the investigations of failed attempts in that country. Two of the near assassination bids on President himself are consigned to the past without much of ado. To make the whole episode murky, the government without losing any time named Baitullah Mehsud, a longtime Taliban supporter and tribal leader of Waziristan, as the man behind this homicidal attack. Basis, Mehsud had sometime back threatened Bhutto. But Bhutto herself and her husband Zardari are not ready to buy this. She has survived the attempt that left 130 onlookers and security personnel dead and 450 injured.

Could the government of Pakistan and the Head of the state were ready to face the international ire in case Bhutto was also a victim of the carnage. If your answer is no, like mine, than it was a ‘bloody’ warning, masterminded and executed with sheer precision and not a blind attempt. In any case, the ISI and the Intelligence Bureau can’t get clean chit, the attack be handiwork of whomsoever.
