Role of civil society in the emerging democratic Nepal

Article Abstract by: kokimira

Original Author: Anil Kumar Mohapatra
Despite much efforts, democracy remains still as an elusive dream and a hard fact to be realized in Nepal. To script a switchover
to democracy has been a very difficult task in presence of the conditions like a waning political culture and irresponsible political party system. However people’s longing for democracy has been a fact there. State in Nepal is gradually losing its credibility. Political parties are also losing trust of people to bring democracy and development.
Now it is the turn of the civil society to prepare the ground for the reintroduction of democracy into the land which has had several unsuccessful experiments with democracy in the past five decades since 1950.This has been a new force in Nepal since the restoration of multi-party democracy in April 1990.Gradually people have started relying on them in solving their own problems by these non-state organizations. These organizations are now very active. People are getting aware of political happenings and are thinking of asserting their role through them. With the insistence of the civil society organizations a much needed consensus has been reached among political parties including the Maoists to hold the election to the much awaited Constituent Assembly in Mid-April, 2008 which is to draft the first ever democratic constitution of Nepal. These organizations are playing great roles in instilling the political values and virtues in the people of Nepal. However they have a long way to go. Despite this commendable initiative of the civil society the current situation of conflict and political degeneration in Nepal calls for soul- searching and introspection on the part of both civil and political society
