THE DIRTY GAME OF POLITICS

Book Abstract by: Cheekah

Original Author: Ibemere Cheekah J.P
It was a cool, breezy and seemingly peaceful  evening that i was relaxing in my room listening to my treasured transistor
radio that the news filtered in my ear.I thought that news was a joke until it sank in that the news that Dr. Funsho Williams-a prominent, benovalent  politician who is well-loved by the masses-is dead was no joke.He was assassinated by unknown gunmen -who are yet to be apprehended as at present-that never respected his personality, his good deeds but pumped hot leads in him ,thus, killing him in cold-blood.His killing was obviously politically related as he was an aspirant in the gubernatorial election that took place recently in the country. This got me thinking why politics is such a dirty game to participate in.
Nonetheless,I define politics as the machinery that is in place in both the lower(Federal),middle(state), and higher(local) hierachy that influences the decision that are essential that is essential for the growth and development of the society. Thus,it instigates power to those in the game. There is no gain-saying that politics have always been a topical issue in Nigeria, the world ditto. This is because of the positive and negative effects it has on ann individual and the society in general. This has made people to be interested in the ups and downs of the game.
Now,the dirtiness of politics have been prominent back in the 70''s and in the 80''s  when coup and assassination was the norm. For example,we have the assassination of  prime leaders like Gen Murtala Mohammed,Gen. Aguiyi Aronsi.Even outside Nigeria, the assassination of former presidents of  America-Abraham Lincoln and J.F  Kennedy-is another example.Coming to the present,we have the unfortunate assassination of Pakistani former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto .The afforementioned is a sad example of the negative effects that power tussling have caused. The named politician were all out to serve the masses whole-heartedly but along the line made some enemies and were cut in their prime.Rigging of elections, thuggery,,money laundering is another means of polluting the political landscape  of Nigeria and othe countries.
Conclusively.it is a precarious situation we found ouirself but it will get worse except the bud is nipped at the right time.Kudos must be given to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission(E.F.C.C),who has apprehended corrupt government officials, dirty governors, but they should not rest in their oars until sanity is brought to the Nigerian politics.The F.G is also given a mandate to encourage them immensely. No bias entertained.Individually, the average politicain or politician-to-be should change their grab-all-you-can mentality and settle down to the business of leading the people who elected them or are they not paid handsomely? The tussling of power is an ill-wind that blows no good. The likes of former governors James Ibori, Tafa Balogun and Richard Nixon would agree with me.
