CRY OVER BAD TREAT MENT BY ASIAN TYCOONS
There have been cries in the press over the bad treatment low class people in Kenya get from rich people, especially the tycoon’s .The citizen newspaper recently cried out loudly for this poor people in the city of Kisumu . It said that the situation was worse in this city .This people went for ordinary manual workers from India and other places on the Asian continent and they treated them worse than slaves, leave alone underpaying them .And then the observer recently carried news about the same topic from the city of Eldoret in the rift valley province, today we bring you more news about the same topic from Kericho town.
In Kericho ,it is not about Asians ,it is about Local Africans .This people are treated as if the world would come to an end ifthose businessesdidn’t exist .It is as if they have no value at all and it is as if they too don’t have a need for money .They are employed in the morning and when they asked for they direction or where the water tap is ,they are sacked instead of getting a glass of water .After two or three days of working, i.e. for those who can withstandthe severe and strict working conditions ,The supervisors start hunting for mistakes on the laborers and the slightest mistakes that they come across on them causes a deduction in their salaries . Nobody can be wise enough to skip these traps.
This whole country is nowadays educated and enlightened politically and in all the other spheres of life .The people of Kenya know their rights and we don’ expect any one of them to go arguing blindly .Bt it is amazing what goes on in those places of work .First the daily rates of pay are below one hundred shillings and The hours of work are twelve hours per a day and then when pay day comes ,the money is chopped up to a third ,the other two thirds of the money can not be traced .When they try to follow up the records ,it ends up in threats of being sued in court for disturbance .Some one works for the whole week ,from one Sunday to the other Sunday without even straightening their backs and without pay .
And, believe it or not, all this happens under the noses of alltheganizations that regulate the functioning of all the processes of labor in this country .There is the ministry of labor and even the unions but, believe it, is not as easy as you could expect it to get your pay in these places .The manual laborers in the go downs need someone to defend them ,someone to help them to watch what is happening and make sure that everything at place of work goes according to the constitution and laws of this country and not the opposite .
The trade unions are to blame for not minding about this kinds of workers welfare .Believe me ,this people are educated up to the O level and then theygond look like morons at their places of work plus the pay that they get .And to make it worse they have no where to go to complain about it .
We are an independent country and everything that we do is aimed at the good of all the people of this country .Going to work in some ones shopdoesn’t mean that they are foolish or they are mentally retarded or something of that kind .When they work ,they expect t be paid .These people have to be paid their money and treated like the sons of their parents ,the sons of this country and not morons .What is going on in this places is too bad and the current chairman of the central organization of Trade unions in Kenya , Mr. FrancisAtwoli ought to do something about it .They themselves can not defend themselves because if they do ,they will lose their jobs .
We recently overhauled our country’s constitution and rectified every section of it so that it fitted with the times .This kinds of things have to go and the labor inspectors have to visit the people and make sure that their rights and the laws of labor are watched .someone has to defend this people because most of the are low class people who can not afford the prices of following up this matters.
There are many such places in Kericho tow and its environs .Places where you are given a contract to unload a heavy commercial truck full of cement or sugar or any other heavy good ,when you are nearing to finish the contract ,some lame excuse rise up in to the air form nowhere and then you end having your money being deducted .And sometimes .those who go searching for work in the go downs ,they get employed and then kicked out of those place like begging dogs i.e. they employ and sack people according to their wish even when the weak people are right .
Things of this kind ought to have been wiped out of the lists of the obstacles to development long ago
There are some construction companies that still do this and some go downs, the Raha wholesalers is a good example.
