The arrest of World Chessmaster Gary Kasparov this weekend by the sinister paramilitary OMON was a brutal attempt to crush a pro-
democracy rally. Kasparov is the leader of the United Civil Front which is part of the oposition coalition, Other Russia. This group asserts that Russian President Putin has destroyed democracy in present day Russia. 200
people were detained. Kasparov supporters chanted ''freedom for
political prisoners'' outside the
police station where Kasparov was detained, inviting police to baton charge the crowd who immediately dispersed. Kasparov on retirement from chess has ardently opposed Putin for centralising power in Russia and destroying any organised
opposition.Kasparov has a clear objective - the parliamentary elections in December 2007, Putin is due for re-election March 2008. The street is now the only place where people can express their views.Unfortunately, U.K. political refugee Berezovsky declared he was plotting a revolution to overthrow Putin, Rusiia demanded the U.K. expel him. Russia clearly fears any display of opposition even Kasyanov, a former Prime Minister has joined the opposition. Illarionov, Shenderovich and Khakamada former Kremlin insiders and presently aspiring liberal politicians arrived at the banned rally site despite others being beaten and arrested for no reason.Putin has a case to answer, three opposition Kremlin deputies have been murdered, three investigative jounalists have died myteriously. Kasparov has moved his family abroad. Former FSB man Litvinenko''s poisoning in the U.K. must be explained.
