Right to recall can't be
accepted unless made practical: Salman Khurshid
By
hook or by crook win an election in India, and your life is made. Leave aside
the lifelong facilities provided by the government to MPs and MLAs; the real source
of earning of elected representatives comes from corruption, which they are
reluctant to lose. That is why so much resistance came from the government to
accept Anna Hazare’s agenda of Lokpal bill. Once an MP, the public money
becomes his fiefdom and he/she grabs it by any way possible. Anna Hazare’s fast
against corruption would have died immaturely if the people of this country did
not support it. This time, the support was so overwhelming that the government
smelt a serious trouble if his demands were not heed to. Hazare too compromised
a bit to give some space to the government and his three sticky points had to
be discussed on a special Saturday and the almost unanimous sense of parliament
was sent to the Standing Committee for its deliberation. Hazare ended his fast
the next day and without losing time declared his next move against corruption
on the subject ‘Right to Recall’. It is too early to comment on this subject
matter, as Annaji has not recovered from his deteriorated health due to
non-stop 13 days of fast at Ramlila Maidan in Delhi. The situation has become
such that anything coming out of his mouth is being taken seriously by the
government, it seems. Nothing has happened yet, but the Law Minister of the
government Salman Khurshid has reacted to Hazare’s contention on Right to
Recall. This is interesting. What I feel is Hazare has the potential of
bringing masses on one platform, which is the biggest force in the democratic country
India.
In
any case, once a strong Lokpal bill is made; other necessary new laws would
follow one after another by the pressure of the people of the country under the
leadership of Anna Hazare, we believe. The Right to Recall and Right to Reject
are significant in India, because electoral reform is the most basic necessity
for the country to tackle corruption.
Khurshid
said that right to recall concept would not be accepted by the government if it
was not made practical. What he means about practical, I do not know.
