Woman faints during Puja, raped by doc in ICU
Rape cases in police stations, hospitals, and educational institutions are indeed indications of breakdown of system in India. When the most trusted people commit this type of heinous crime, no place is secured can be said with conviction. The problem needs to be addressed with firmness, and if necessary, the law should be amended to punish those culprits severely.
A Bengali woman sought the help of the hospital authority, and got a blot on his life that would haunt her forever in life. No amount of punishment would make her forget the untoward incidence, for which her life might even turns upside down in future.
The incident happened on the fateful night of 16 October during the Durga Puja festival between 13 and 16 October. The woman, whose identity is not disclosed in the news report, fainted while in the puja premises in the ICL school ground, sector 15, Vashi. She was taken to the nearby Lotus hospital for immediate medical assistance, where she was kept in the ICU for the night. Her husband remained present in the hospital but outside the ICU in a different place. The resident medical officer of the hospital Dr. Vishal Vanne took the opportunity of her semi consciousness and physically assaulted her, which according to police is rape. Since she was not in full sense, she neither could resist the doctor nor could shout for help. Vanne, a resident of Ghansoli, too has admitted his crime that he committed between 2 and 5 am to the police, informed the source. The report mentioned of another patient in the same ICU in deep sleep. He has been taken into custody and would be produced in the court today (18.10.10), said Rajkumar Chapekar, the investigating officer.
The hospital authority is shying away from giving any statement in this respect, informed the news media. Vanne joined the Lotus Hospital in last December in the fairly new hospital of two years. How a doctor can stoop so low is beyond our apprehension. Did he think of any consequences that would definitely occur?
