Yes we can...
I have no doubt in mind that sometimes in future not far from now President Obama has to bite his nail repenting his decision of today. The US is the biggest advocate of world trade and the same country is now pressing its people to buy indigenous goods, which is rather silly. Can the president force anybody to buy products of his choice if the individual finds benefits in other products? Obama’s contention in protecting America’s economy is the age old slogan of Indians in the British era of Indian subcontinent. There were valid reasons at that time to boycott British goods, but the same contention of America today has no reason to do so. Can America progress in terms of business if other countries boycott its products elsewhere?
‘Buy American’ bill won’t be an effective tool for Obama; rather it would boomerang without doubt. The global recession was the result of American mismanagement of its banks and other financial institutions. That has to be corrected not through the means that the President is contemplating. It seems the President is unconsciously implementing his hatred behavior towards other countries. Today WTO is being strengthened by all the countries for a level playing field, which should not be discouraged in the globalization initiative.
Renowned people who spoke against Obama’s new bill are Jagdish Bhagwati of Columbia University, Fadhil Mohammed of GM of a consultancy firm, Vedantam of Viswa Hindu Parishad, and the member of the legislative assembly in India K Tarakarama Rao. Population wise biggest countries like India and China help other countries to sell their goods, which would be affected immensely for America.
The President needs to look for more scientific and justified ways to revive the American economy. The path to boycott call is not the right one.
