FBI warns of Mumbai-type terror attacks on US cities
The slow and steady progress of terrorism,
though quashed intermittently, has put world security agencies under pressure. The recent statement of the
FBI Director Robert S. Mueller supports the voracity of terrorists.
"The universe of crime and terrorism stretches out infinitely before us, and we too are working to find what we believe to be out there but cannot always see," said the director of FBI.
The epicenter of terrorism is now
Pakistan, shifted from Middle Eastern pockets, and
Afghanistan in the aftermath of 9/11. The fear of
terrorist attack from known terrorist groups is shifted to local bodies, which may or may not affiliate to these known groups. Mr. Mueller speculated with enough intelligence that the possibility of an American citizen getting involved in suicide bombing in the near future. To substantiate his remark he mentioned the investigation of a group in Minneapolis of which a young man went to Somalia for this purpose.
Fanatics with good resolve can inflict serious wounds with elementary weapons creating unprecedented horror and panic among citizens, and that can happen in US cities too, cautioned FBI director. Accordingly the FBI has added its focus on the immigrants entering US through the visa waiver programme. Apart from this, the attention is also given to the home grown terrorists due to the influence of big brothers through electronic gadgets, opined Mueller at the Council of Foreign Relations in Washington last Monday.
The Mumbai terrorist attack on 26/11 is an example how the terrorists have been brain washed to kill innocent people indiscriminately without ever thinking any consequences. When these young men from poor families are lured and then trained through the doctrine of Islam, they believe this cause of killing as pious acts. Nothing can stop them as they are destined to sacrifice their lives for a so called good motive. It is not the sophisticated weapon that is matter of concern today; it is the person who is going to use this for killing, and at times the simple weapon can inflict irreparable harm on peace loving society.
Mueller’s apprehension is that America is a country of immigrants and freedom, hence the prospect of ill thinking men entering the country with ulterior motives are much more in the present scenario than yester years.
Radical elements are increasing in the pockets of
Seattle, San Diego, New York, and other places, worriedly commented FBI officials. Secluded, narrow minded communities are responsible for this indoctrination of innocent youths in extremism is a perversion of immigrant story, Mueller thinks.
