Wonky Fruit Back on the Menu

Article Summary by: RosieLee

Original Author: Daily Mail Reporter
Of all the rules and regulations by which we must abide, the total ban of all 'wonky' produce is not seemingly important
and is one we never really think about.  But it is important. 36 different types of produce are assessed under the law which states that they must be a certain size, shape and colour to be allowed to go on sale.  They are not assessed, as they should be, simply by what they are and if they are or are not fit for human consumption.  EU Agriculture Commissioner Mariann Fischer Boel declared: 'It makes no sense to throw perfectly good products away, just because they are the 'wrong' size and shape.'  And yet for 20 years, perfectly good products have been discarded.
Not only is the immense waste just disgusting, but is this not a little hypocritical in today's politically correct society?  If you say a person is the 'wrong shape' you can be fined, arrested, branded a bully.  But if you say a carrot is the wrong shape, it doesn't matter, just throw it away! (Not that I'm comparing people with carrots, but hopefully you know what I mean.)
These unconformist, imperfect vegetables may look a little funny, but will taste, obviously, exactly the same.  Not only will we all have a bit of a giggle at the funny shapes, but we'll also cheer with joy that the funnier vegetables will be cheaper the normal boring ones.  Could the raising of this ban change the face of Britain? With the introduction of this cheaper healthy option, we'll be laughing (at the shapes) all the way to the (piggy) bank.  Happier, healthier and richer.  All because of a few ugly vegetables.
