Malaysian PM urges model to appeal against caning Malaysia is a predominantly Muslim country, and
the sharya rule is prevalent in this state. This rule snatches away many modern ways of life for both men and women. It is especially for the women, some acts are considered as contemptuous.
Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno committed a so-called crime by drinking alcohol, and for that the court in the Pahang state has sentenced her guilty with a
punishment of caning in public. A 32-year old woman, ex model, married, and a mother of two, is of the opinion that she would not appeal to any appropriate authority for the lessening of the punishment. Malaysian Prime Minister Najib tun Razak has suggested to Kartika to appeal to different
authorities against the Pahang state Sharia court’s verdict. This is probably to subside the heat that has gathered throughout the globe, especially the western countries, on this inhuman punishment on frivolous ground. Kartika’s stand is clear. She wants her punishment to go on as per schedule in the presence of media. Why she is so keen for her punishment is not yet known. The punishment was to be carried out in the holy month of Ramadan, but was been deferred. Again, it is not known on what ground the deferment has been made.
Malaysian rule strictly forbid the consumption and trading in of alcohol. The authorities have caught men on this specific charge, and punished the men. This is the first instance that a woman is caught on drinking alcohol in public.
Razak has shown his keenness for Kartika to appeal against the punishment by saying that she should not resign to the verdict on her, the king said to Star Online site. The king thinks that the authorities would consider her appeal, as they are thoughtful and sensitive.
On July 20, the verdict was pronounced to cane her six strokes in public for the offence of drinking alcohol in public. Whether the act of punishment would go or not, Kartika’s punishment has attracted many countries for its vicious nature. News papers all over the world carried the news of Kartika’s punishment; blog sites are full of her pathetic news too.
