Couple in Uttar Pradesh forced to become siblings

We are in the 21st century, our economy is
growing at the rate of 7 to 9% for the last few years, in space technology we compete with the world leading countries, and our villages maintain the 16th century viewpoints. What is happening in the country, we want to ask to the government.
An incident I am going to narrate is one good example of serious lacking from the part of the government machineries to see that people can live with full freedom in their respective places. Love cannot be termed as a crime, and exactly that is seen in this incident.
Pintoo Sharma and his fiancée were quietly spending time sitting side by side in a garden of Kukra village situated in Bijnor district of the state Uttar Pradesh. Their liking of each other was not acceptable to some members of the village panchayat. This reason is enough for those members to forcefully bring them before an Uttar Pradesh Village Council, and compelled them to acknowledge each other as brother and sister. Just imagine the mental condition of those two souls while doing this. In the first instance, they refused to slap each other that was ordered by the council. The same act of slapping then was taken over by the council members by their shoes repeatedly.
How long they could object the might and humiliation of so many people? Pintoo was made to touch the feet of his lover and accept her as the elder sister, and she had to tie a ‘rakhi’ around his wrist making him his brother. These acts were meted out to them as punishment for their sacred act of liking each other. The panchayat also ordered them to live in different villages. This information came from Hardhar Kumar, a local resident of that village.
The matter has gone to the notice of the local police, but they have not arrested any person so far before conducting an enquiry. Police Inspector SK Saxena has given the assurance that the involved persons in the incident would be suitably punished after the enquiry is over.
