AIDS in Fiji is more than a health concern; it is also a development issue. Despite growing concern over AIDS, over
the past decade, few resources have gone towards highlighting the importance of protecting the confidentiality of AIDS infected individuals. It is important that while government policies set out to protect public health, it must also take measures to protect the individual to allow him or hear to voluntarily come forward to seek treatment, testing and advice from medical practitioners. The duty of confidentiality is important because of its assistance in preventing discrimination against people living with AIDS. In Fiji there are three main circumstances that give rise for the need to develop the duty of confidentiality. The success of this health policy depends entirely on the mutual respect for the confidentiality of the patient care information that flows from the patient to the medical practitioner.
