The senate of the Brasilian Republic once was, as the founders of the institution wanted, roman citizens, the place of debates among the wise and honorable of the country.
However, the elector law that determinates the choice of senators today allows names like Sibá Machado and Wellington Salgado, without one single popular vote, to reach the Senate. The fist substitute of Marina Silva, of the Enviroment environment minestery, and another from Helio Costa, comunications ministry. None of them has any commitment with any voter, or any concept or anything, for they were not chosen by the people of the State they represent. The choice for Sibá may have been for frined''s favor, but Salgado, certeinly was beacause he sponsered the ministry Costa''s campaingn. It is people like that that maintain the impunity, since we all have seen how those people reacted to this Renan Calheiros escandal, determined, by any means necessary, without analizing the evidence, to close the case of breach of
parliamentary honor to which the president of the senate is being accused, not caring to the opinion of the people of the State they say to represent. The Renan Calheiros scandal and now, most recently the Joaquim Roriz scandal, tarnish the Senate, but embarass even more those susbstitutes that didn''t have any votes. Only the popular democratic vote can end this shame.
