Book Summary   by:konthai     Original Author: Dilip Hero in Outlook
ª

THE ZERO SUM FIASCO byDILIP HERO Article in "Outlook " Part 2When
the anti--shiite Taliban came to power in 1998,tension followed with
Tehran following the killing of a dozen Shiite Iran diplomats in
the capital Mazar-e- Shariff . Thousands of Irans Revolutionary Guards
took position in the border with Afghanistan but did not strike but
pulled back from the brink of war. However, they continued to treat the
Taliban as a hostile entity brought in by Pakistan and Saudi Arabia.
However, contrary to their public posturing including protests against
aerial attacks by Pentagon on Afghanistan, they secretly shared
intelligence with US against Taliban. Hence both the politicians and
general public of Iran were jubilant in the defeat of Taliban and
actively helped US to install Hamid Karzai as the leader of Post
Taliban Afghanistan. Then in the aftermath of US invasion of IRAQ the
feared Shiite dominated government came into existence. The
defeat of its enemies in the east i.e Afghanistan, and to the west
viz IRAQ thanks to Junior Bush''s hiddden agenda gave Iran a central
regionally dominant and strategic role , which they consider
they deserved . IRAN has the largest population, four times that of
IRAQ,shares land and water borders with nine countries, and has a
coastline that runs along the whole of Persian Gulf as well as the
Arabian Sea and the land locked Caspian Sea.Moreover, it possesses
world''s second largest reserves of oil and natural gas. In its regional
policy it does not differentiate between Shiites and Sunnis. They had
helped Hamas with material and moral although it is Sunni Palestinian
movement This policy is in consonance with the popular sentiment with
Arabs.Ordinarily Arabs do not have sectarian differences in general
except in the case of IRAQ. Arab rulers have stressed the
sectarian differences with IRAN rather than any difference in ideology
or policy disagreement. Taking advantage of this Bush Administration is
trying to rally all the Arab world into one single Sunnis to counter
the rising influence of SHIITE IRAN.They seem to forget that all this
mess they are now in, was their reckless action of their invasion
of IRAQ .This forestalls that Washington under Bush would
be the loser, irrespective of who is in power in the region , whether it
is Sunnis or Shiites .This illustrates the classic example of a steep
decline of a Superpower in the Zero Sum Fiasco. konthai
