US sees Pakistan as a hurdle in its anti-terror strategy
US
foreign policy for the last ten years under president Bush Jr. has not yielded the expected result. Past president Musharraf played the dubious role that neither could curtail terrorist acts nor could save the country itself from its clutch.
The new president of America, Barak Obama has commenced the journey with right note, but the difficulties in front the new administration is growing with every passing day. America needs Pakistan to eradicate the root of terrorism, where as Paksitan is getting wrapped by the terrorism that they instigated. In the recent months more terrorist attack were seen in Pakistan than combined other countries. The worry US is expressing is justifiable as Pakistan has started loosing control over the provinces, and Taliban is establishing its bases there.
The democratic government in Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, is facing increasing threat of disharmony because of Taliban’s growing clout in the border of Afghanistan-Pakistan. Richard Holbrooke, the special envoy of President Obama has shown his tense concern regarding peace in Afghanistan that is closely linked with Pakistan’s steady law and order.
Harsh decision like adding about 21000 defence man power, and further training to thousands of local troops have been taken to tackle the matter with firm hand. The other approach is to aid Pakistan an additional 5 billion dollars against Pakistan’s meaningful act on terrorism related activities. Obama has stated firmly that no aid would be given to Pakistan without any accountability from their part. Result oriented assistance is the need of the hour, and the concept of giving blank cheques must be over, Obama opined. Pakistan must show ground result that they are serious in weeding out the Al Qaeda and other terrorist groups from the Afgan-Pakistan border altogether. Reports from US intelligence agencies are contrary to the wish of the president, and he is decided to have result oriented assistance than just aid.
Pakistan after agreeing with US in the aftermath of 9/11 did turn about their policy of routing terrorism out from their land, but things have come back to square one again. Direct assistance to terrorist groups by the ISI and Pakistan defence is the cause of concern for US today. Since the new president of US Barak Obama is determined to finish off this menace of extremism, the results will be seen if new policies of US directed by the president are followed in letter and spirit.
