Now it is the turn of
Parvez Musharraf to face the wrath of judiciary as well as the government of Pakistan. There was a
time, when he was the president and the chief of Defences in Pakistan exercising his full power legally and illegally. The well-known fact that Pakistan army controls the running of the government was the reason of Musharraf’s refusal to vacate one of the two important positions he was occupying simultaneously. His activities were not as per with the country’s constitution, and his whimsical decisions were made legitimate sheer by removing those people from the constitutional offices, who raised voice against his decisions. He did not hesitate even to sack the
Chief Justice of the highest court of the country along with other judges for clinging to power with both the posts of president and chief of Army Staff. The last big decision that he took with the declaration of emergency in the country to counter the severe opposition from almost all the institutions of the country was the cause of his downfall from the power and grace.
The election was held to restore the democracy, in which his party did not do well despite his being in the helm, and he had to relinquish the post of Chief of Army Staff. He retained presidency for sometimes after that, but had to bow down in front of the collective pressure eventually.
The new government of Asif Ali Zardari, the husband of the slain ex prime minister Benazir Bhutto, had to reinstate the Chief Justice, Iftikar Muhammad Choudhry as the Chief Justice along with other judges, who were removed by Musharraf.
The detention of 60 judges after declaring emergency in 2007 was discussed in the Apex Court for evaluation, and it declared that the move was unconstitutional. The district session judge Akmal Raza ordered the police to file FIR against Musharraf after a lawyer Aslam Ghuman submitted an application in the court for a case to be registered. Many people did the same earlier, but the authorities did not heed to their asking.
Musharraf is out of the country now. He is in Europe for personal visit. It is not known when he will be returning to the country.
