Bbc Radio 4 : James Joyce! Ulysses

Article Review   by:SM THOMPSON

There is something on the radio on BBC Radio 4 on Saturday 16th June Bloomsday in Dublin
Ireland on air all day long and in the chair Mark Lawson BBC Man on arts.

I listened with rapturous attention and I feed off the research I have done over the last
3O years and having taught Modernism I was intrigued to tune into
the readings which were in an episodic form all day long on BBC Radio 4:

The attention span however dwindled rather so I broke off to dine but not in the classic Joycean way which was
adequately described in a number of readings which I have listened to in the past and I dread
fixing any of it in print least one of those eminent Joycean scholars yell back - that's not
how it was but I like them was left to whatever interpretation the BBC Show chose to put on the
epic recording of James Joyce's famous literary work of "Ulysses".

The BBC warning was heeded which was that some of the language in the final episode was so strong that
it would make your hair stand on end so weak at the knees I decided not to listen it through least
my nervous disposition was upset so much so that I would require medical attention.

"The ineluctable modality of the visible" is an unforgettable line from James Joyce's "Ulysses"
and it was quoted on this BBC Radio 4 Show on air and I must admit ti has that wonderful
poetic link that I feel sure most of our students today would enjoy.

The fineness of the language in Joyce is well documented and the colour of the tone of the
great masterpiece always draws us all back to that great episodic form even though sometimes
its so far removed from modern life that its necessary to don the mantle of the Professor of
Literature and get in the right mood to tune in, enjoy and join the literary genius of James Joyce's
literary landscape portrayed in his literary masterpiece: ULYSSES: Hard work pays UP!
