We can start with a simple relaxation technique that you can any time you fell that relaxation and increased concentration are appropriate. It will enable you to conserve energy and focus the mind better when reading, studying or doing any monotonous or boring job. Do not allow your analytical mind to be misled by its simplicity. With practice, it will become a powerful weapon in your defence against distraction and similar negative or self-defeating attitudes and emotions.
The technique has a long and honourable history, dating back thousands of years before its adoption as an early Christian-Judaic prayer and meditation technique.
While reading the next several lines, place the book on a table or on your lap or hold it comfortably in your left hand. Allow your right arm to dangle limply by your side. Do that now, before reading on. Now check for tension by tensing your arms and shoulders and relax them. Inhale slowly and deeply, hold the breath to the mental count of four and release it in a long, deep sing. Do it again if you choose to do so, continuing down from eight to one as you slowly release the breath?
