Where'd You Go, Bernadette

Book Review   by:SM THOMPSON     Original Author: Maria Semple

Usually I mail these little presents in Guardian Weekend to family OVERESEAS but on this
occasion I decided it was right up my street.

The first annoying thing is when I ask Dad what he thinks happened to Mom, he always says, "What's most important is for you to understand it's not your fault".

The story unfolds in little verses and there is some of the text in this booklet so one assumes that the
rest is contained in the original script.

MOM VERSUS THE GHATS Monday November 15:

is an original take on story telling with a recipe like list counting out the grades in school in
chosen subjects and giving a Grade S rather than the usual, a: B: C:

S: means: Surpassses excellence
A: means: Achieves excellence
W: means: working towards excellence

Student: Bee Branch
Grade: Eight
Teacher: Levy:

Tuesday November 16 is either a memo or a letter or an email ... or

Or better still its the correspondence from one source to another and provides an insight into a
delightful presentation providing there is a free weekend stretching ahead and there is time to
pore over it all and work it out ................ we shall work it out.

The main character is Bernadette Fox and she is described as "notorious" : To Elgie Branch a Microsoft wunderkind, she's his hilarious, volatile, talented troubled wife. To the mothers at the school gate she's a menace.
To design experts, she's a revolutionary architect. And to 15 year old Bee, she is a best friend and quite simply mom. But the story continues as Bernadette disappears: and Bee must take a trip to the end of the earth to find her: It is described in glowing terms as "Fresh and funny" by Kate Atkinson and "A fresh, flamboyantly witty new voice" comment from Helen Fielding: It is available at Waterstones or online at Waterstones.com
